ULYDIA maps careers to the study paths that lead to them, in five countries

Teenagers picking a career rarely know which qualifications lead to it. Looking abroad, they know even less: degrees carry different names, run for different lengths, and do not map onto one another. A French BTS, an American Associate Degree and a British Higher National Diploma sit at a comparable level in their own systems — but no service tells that to a seventeen-year-old.

National guidance tools stop at the border. International rankings speak to students already enrolled in higher education, not to those still deciding.

Start from the job, work back to the qualification

ULYDIA starts from the occupation. For each of the 1,617 careers it documents, the platform sets out the skills involved, typical employers and prospects, then shows the study paths that lead there and the institutions that teach them.

Career profiles are available across 249 territories. Detailed study paths currently cover five countries: France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Colombia. Extending them to further countries is the work under way.

From career to application

The journey does not stop at browsing. A student starts from a career that interests them, finds the courses that lead there, reviews the institutions that teach them, then applies directly through the platform to the schools and universities registered on it.

The institution receives the request in its own workspace and handles it there: real-time messaging with the applicant, document sharing, and a pipeline running from shortlisting to interview, then to admission and confirmed enrolment. The student sees each step update on their side, without having to chase it.

A common frame for different qualification systems

Degree names do not translate. ULYDIA places each path on a recognition framework: the European Qualifications Framework for Europe, the North American credit system, the British model across the Commonwealth, and the systems specific to East Asia, Latin America and the Arab world.

That work — invisible to the user — is what lets the platform show that two paths lead to the same level of qualification in two countries, even when the degrees have nothing in common.

The platform is available in five languages, on the web and on iOS and Android.

Free for families, funded by institutions

Access is free of charge and free of advertising for pupils, students and their families. No data is sold on.

Schools, universities and training providers can claim their profile at no cost. A paid plan lets them expand it, publish open days and fairs, and receive applications directly. That plan funds the service.

Notes on method

Qualifications. The 347,918 qualifications come from official national sources — public certification registers and ministry databases, depending on the country. ULYDIA also aggregates qualifications from other sources, which are not counted in that figure.

Number of careers. The reference set holds 1,617 careers in France and 1,605 in most other countries. The gap comes from some sixty occupations specific to the French context, with no direct equivalent elsewhere.

Pay figures. Salaries shown on career profiles are orders of magnitude, intended to situate an occupation. They are not pay surveys and should not be quoted as measurements. Profiles backed by an official public pay scale are marked as such.

Degrees. Qualification types and their equivalence level are recorded for all 249 territories covered. A detailed catalogue, going down to each individual qualification and field, currently exists for four countries, and is being extended.
